Explain SMBC — the wiki for Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

This comic features a journalist interviewing an Einstein-like physicist about how he discovered general relativity. The physicist gives a poetic, reverent answer: "Whenever I try to understand the cosmos, I think 'How would God design it?'" The journalist is moved, calling it beautiful. The physicist sheepishly agrees with a "...Yeah..."

The "Earlier..." flashback reveals the less dignified truth. We see the physicist proposing the core idea of general relativity -- "I'm gonna make mass curve spacetime" -- and God (depicted as a large yellow smiley face) and other figures laughing hysterically at the absurdity of the idea. The joke is a reversal of the reverent origin story: rather than the physicist humbly channeling divine wisdom, God actually found the idea of mass curving spacetime hilarious and ridiculous.
