Explain SMBC — the wiki for Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

This comic is titled "Why Doctors Shouldn''t Study Philosophy." A doctor tells a patient, "The good news is you''ll die slowly over the next few weeks. The bad news is that you don''t contextualize that as good news." The humor lies in the doctor applying philosophical reframing to a terminal diagnosis -- from a certain philosophical perspective, a slow death could be considered "good news" compared to a sudden one, since it gives the patient time to put affairs in order, say goodbyes, and so on. But of course, no patient wants to hear their impending death described as good news under any framing.

The joke plays on the gap between academic philosophical reasoning and practical human empathy. A doctor trained in philosophy might technically be able to construct a logical argument for why a slow death is preferable, but this is exactly the kind of detached intellectualizing that makes for terrible bedside manner.
