Explanation
The Joke
The comic tells the story of Jack and the Beanstalk reimagined as a geopolitical crisis. Jack plants magic beans, which grow into a giant beanstalk reaching a giant's castle. A scientist confirms the situation is real, and the field of giantology is born. The giant's castle becomes the most studied location on Earth. The House of Representatives announces that the giant's holdings "will be atomized." But as the giants' advisors emerge, they turn out to be surprisingly reasonable -- they propose that humans and giants coexist, suggesting humans relocate to a "compact valley" to form a cohesive community.
Then comes the twist: the reason the giants seem generous is that they have Pinocchio as their advisor. The humans realize Pinocchio's nose-based lie detection should have tipped them off. But it's too late -- the giants' true plan was to fatten humanity up for decades, and they proceed to threaten to destroy the world. The final panel shows the characters lamenting as a Cthulhu-like creature appears, and someone screams "Nooooo!"
The Humor
The comic satirizes several things simultaneously. It mocks the way real geopolitical crises unfold -- initial panic, scientific study, congressional posturing, and diplomatic negotiations that sound reasonable but hide sinister motives. The inclusion of Pinocchio as a diplomatic advisor is absurd, and the joke is that having a being whose lies are physically detectable should have been an obvious red flag, yet the humans failed to notice.
The escalating absurdity -- from fairy tale beans to congressional hearings to Cthulhu -- is a hallmark of SMBC's style of taking a simple premise and pushing it to its most ridiculous logical extreme. The comic also plays on the "fairy tale mashup" concept, combining Jack and the Beanstalk, Pinocchio, and Lovecraftian horror into one narrative.
