Explanation
The Joke
A girl is standing at a microphone on stage, apparently participating in a spelling bee. She is given the word "zephyr." Instead of spelling it correctly, she spells out "F-U-C-K-I-N-G-P-O-I-N-T-L-E-S-S" -- spelling out "fucking pointless" -- and then says "Zephyr."
The caption below reads: "This is the best way to lose at a spelling bee."
The Humor
The comic imagines the most entertaining way to deliberately lose a spelling bee: by using the formal spelling bee format (repeating the word, spelling it out letter by letter, then repeating the word again) but substituting a profane editorial comment for the actual spelling. The girl follows the ritualistic structure of a spelling bee perfectly -- say the word, spell, say the word -- but uses it to deliver a blunt opinion about the pointlessness of the competition itself. The contrast between the innocent setting (a child at a school spelling bee) and the vulgarity of the spelled-out phrase creates the comedic impact. There is also a meta-humor in the fact that she technically is spelling -- just not the assigned word.
