Explanation
The Joke
In a corporate boardroom meeting, executives discuss a problem: "People just aren't buying cheap vodka any more." They ask: "We need to go upscale without spending any more on production. Marketing, whatcha got?"
The answer is revealed in the next panel: a bottle labeled "O'Finnegan's PURE Zero Malt SCOTCH." The joke is that the marketing department's solution to making cheap vodka seem premium is to simply relabel it as scotch -- but the label is hilariously contradictory and nonsensical. The name "O'Finnegan's" sounds Irish (not Scottish), "Zero Malt" is an oxymoron for scotch (which must be made from malted barley by definition), and calling vodka "scotch" is fundamentally fraudulent.
The Humor
The humor works on several levels. First, it satirizes how marketing often prioritizes perception over substance -- the product hasn't changed at all, only the label. Second, the label itself is a masterpiece of absurdity for anyone who knows anything about spirits: scotch whisky must be made from malted grain and aged in Scotland, so "Zero Malt Scotch" is a contradiction in terms. The Irish-sounding name "O'Finnegan's" on a product labeled "Scotch" shows the marketing team doesn't even understand the basic cultural distinctions between Irish and Scottish products. The word "PURE" adds another layer of irony, as nothing about this product is what it claims to be.
