Explanation
The Joke
A TSA-style airport security agent stops a traveler and says: "Sir, before we can let you into the terminal, please remove your sandals." The traveler complies. The agent then demands his socks. The traveler removes those too. The agent then instructs him to put his sandals back on. The agent declares: "There. Now you don't look like an asshole." The traveler, apparently wearing sandals without socks now, sincerely responds: "Thank you for your service."
The Humor
The comic takes the familiar indignity of airport security -- where travelers must remove shoes, belts, and other items -- and twists it into a fashion intervention. Instead of screening for weapons or contraband, the security agent is enforcing the widely-held sartorial opinion that wearing socks with sandals is a fashion crime. The humor lies in the misdirection: the setup leads us to expect typical security theater, but the payoff reveals the agent is simply correcting a fashion faux pas. The traveler's sincere "Thank you for your service" -- a phrase usually reserved for military or emergency personnel -- adds an extra layer of absurdity, as if being told not to wear socks with sandals is a genuine public service. The comic also subtly parodies how compliant travelers are with arbitrary security demands, following instructions without question even when they make no sense.
