The Joke
A doctor tells a couple: "I'm afraid you were... an accident." This is a reversal of the classic scenario where parents tell a child they were an accident. Here, the parents are being told that they were the accident. The doctor explains that their child wasn't born naturally -- rather, the parents were in a lab, and they accidentally combined nano-enzymes that metamorphosed into what appears to be a human child. In other words, the child created the parents by accident, not the other way around.
When asked if they're upset, the mother says "honestly, a little," and the child offers to get them some bananas -- a consolation that mirrors how a parent might comfort a child learning they were unplanned.
The Humor
The comedy comes from the complete role reversal. The anxiety many people feel about having been an "accident" or "unplanned pregnancy" is a common cultural touchstone. The comic inverts this by making the parents the ones who were accidental byproducts of their child's lab experiment. The sci-fi nano-enzyme backstory makes the reversal even more absurd -- the parents didn't just happen by chance, they were accidentally synthesized. The child offering bananas as consolation is a perfectly patronizing parental gesture redirected at the parents, completing the role swap.
