Explanation
This comic shows a man lounging on his couch at home, shirtless and relaxed, gleefully exclaiming: "My God. I set up an AI for my cubicle and put a balloon with a face in my chair and I just keep getting paid. Idiots!"
The caption below reads: "By the year 2050, nobody will work and everyone will believe they are scamming everyone else."
The joke extrapolates current trends in AI and remote/hybrid work to an absurd conclusion. As AI becomes more capable and physical office presence becomes less important, the comic imagines a future where everyone has replaced themselves at work with an AI and a crude physical stand-in (a balloon with a face drawn on it). The twist is that everyone believes they are uniquely clever for pulling off this scam -- but in reality, everyone is doing the same thing. Nobody is actually working, yet the economy somehow continues because every person's AI is interacting with every other person's AI.
The deeper humor is in the word "idiots" -- the character smugly believes his coworkers and bosses are too stupid to notice, when in fact they have all done exactly the same thing. It is a commentary on how AI might create a strange equilibrium where human labor is largely absent but everyone maintains the pretense of working, each person convinced they are the only one gaming the system.
