The Humor
The joke works on several levels. First, it satirizes the formulaic nature of marriage proposals -- despite being supposedly the most personal, intimate speech a person can give, proposals tend to follow extremely predictable patterns ("from the moment I first saw you," "you make me a better person," "I can't imagine life without you"). The suggestion that a Markov chain could generate a convincing proposal implies that proposals are so templated that a simple statistical text generator could replicate one. Second, the joke plays on the modern tendency to automate and optimize everything, even deeply human rituals. The phrase "in order to save time" is particularly funny because it treats a marriage proposal as an efficiency problem rather than an emotional moment.
