The comic is split into two panels. The joke skewers the conspiracy theory that climate scientists are motivated by a desire for power and control. The comic contrasts this paranoid narrative with the mundane reality of academic life: assistant professors are among the least powerful people in any institutional hierarchy, environmental science statistics is an obscure specialization unlikely to attract power-seekers, and the character immediately breaks from their "evil" monologue to worry about a grant proposal deadline. The humor is in the absurd gap between the supposed sinister master plan and the actual life of an underfunded, overworked academic scrambling for grant money.
