deer
Explanation
In this comic, a group of people are observing a baby deer being born in the woods. The first person marvels at the wonder of it, saying how every baby deer was born with the same genetic manufacturing process that has existed for eons. Another person then shifts the tone entirely by complaining that their interest in "evolutionary biology" is ruining their hike. Yet another person points out a more practical concern: "Look at that invasive buckthorn blocking light from the native saplings below."
The joke is about how scientific knowledge can ruin the simple enjoyment of nature. What starts as a wholesome moment of appreciating a newborn deer quickly devolves as the scientifically-minded members of the group cannot help but view nature through their academic lenses. One person sees a deer and thinks about genetics and manufacturing processes; another sees the forest and immediately notices invasive species ecology problems. The person who just wanted a nice nature hike is caught between competing flavors of nerdiness, none of which allow for simply appreciating the beautiful moment.
This is a classic SMBC theme: the comic frequently explores how deep knowledge or overthinking can strip the magic from everyday experiences. It is also a gentle satire of the kinds of people who go on nature hikes -- outdoorsy intellectuals who cannot turn off their analytical brains.
