Evolution
Explanation
The Joke
Evolution is personified and interviewed about its "design philosophy." Evolution explains that it has no philosophy — it just throws random mutations at the wall and sees what survives. When asked about its greatest achievements (the eye, the brain), Evolution is confused by the praise because from its perspective, there was no intent or plan. Things that worked stuck around. Things that didn't, didn't.
The Humor
The comedy comes from treating a blind, purposeless process as though it were a designer being interviewed. Evolution's "answers" highlight the fundamental misunderstanding behind questions like "why did evolution design X?" — evolution didn't design anything. It's a filter, not an engineer.
The anthropomorphization makes the scientific point more vivid than a textbook explanation: natural selection has no foresight, no goals, and no preferences. Any appearance of "design" is an illusion created by selection pressure over deep time.
Context
Misconceptions about evolution (that it has direction, purpose, or goals) are among the most common in public understanding of science. Weinersmith addresses these misconceptions frequently, usually through humor rather than lecturing.
