The Joke
A woman excitedly announces to a bespectacled man: "Hey, check it out! I got France to run on this old calculator!" It's just a collection of agents that believe themselves to be in a location with certain history and relationships! France is software!" The man flatly responds: "France is not software." In the final panel, she holds up the calculator, which is smoking and saying "putain!" (a French expletive), and declares: "Look! It's smoking and complaining about bread." The man concedes: "I'll be damned."
The comic plays with the philosophical concept of substrate independence — the idea that a mind or system could theoretically run on any computational medium, not just biological neurons. The woman takes this concept to an absurd extreme by arguing that an entire nation is just "software" that could be emulated on a calculator.
