golden-2
Explanation
This comic is a graph joke about smartphones and bathroom habits.
The graph shows a timeline with "Time" on the x-axis and an unlabeled y-axis (implying social awkwardness). Three points are marked: "First Humans," "Smartphone Created," and "Sentient Machine Intelligence on Every Device." The line drops sharply after smartphones are created (making it normal to bring your phone to the bathroom) and rises sharply again once sentient AI is on every device. The caption reads: "We are living in a brief golden age of non-awkwardly taking your phone to the bathroom."
The humor rests on the observation that before smartphones, there was no reason to bring a device into the bathroom, so doing so would be odd. Smartphones made it completely normal and socially acceptable to bring your phone everywhere, including the bathroom. But the comic projects forward: once phones contain sentient artificial intelligence, bringing your phone to the bathroom becomes awkward again -- because you would essentially be forcing a conscious being to accompany you to the toilet. The "golden age" we currently enjoy is the narrow window between these two eras of awkwardness.
