History
Explanation
The Joke
The comic shows four panels depicting the progression of "Reading History" over time. On Day Zero: "As a frequent podcast listener, I know most of the past." Day One: "Maybe it's a little complicated." Day 100: "I don't know a goddamned thing." Day 1000: "Nobody knows a goddamned thing." The character appears to physically age and become more distressed with each stage, eventually depicted as a pale, exhausted figure slumped over books.
The Humor
The comic illustrates the Dunning-Kruger effect applied to the study of history. The character begins with supreme confidence derived from superficial exposure (podcasts), then gradually realizes how little they know, and ultimately arrives at the conclusion that historical knowledge itself is deeply uncertain and contested. Each stage represents a well-known phase of learning: initial overconfidence, growing humility, deep self-doubt, and finally the unsettling realization that even experts disagree on fundamental questions. The physical deterioration of the character mirrors the psychological toll of genuine intellectual engagement with a complex subject, contrasted with the breezy confidence of casual consumption.
