Explanation
The Joke
A person confronts Jesus, asking if the practice of giving things up for Lent is just God demanding arbitrary sacrifices for no good reason. Jesus responds that He cannot even stop people from making graven images of Him, and that doing so would only make things worse. The person rephrases the complaint: it seems like God wants people to do something difficult and meaningless just to prove they are willing to do it. Jesus's response in the final panel is a twist — He admits that this used to bother Him too, but now He has been doing it so long that He can do it without even thinking about it, implying He Himself has been going through the motions of religion without genuine engagement.
The comic takes the common skeptical critique of Lent — that giving up chocolate or social media for forty days is an arbitrary, meaningless sacrifice — and puts it directly to Jesus. Rather than defending the practice with theological reasoning, Jesus essentially concedes the point and then reveals that even He has fallen into the same pattern of mindless ritual.
The Humor
The humor lies in the irony of Jesus Himself admitting that religious practice has become rote and automatic, even for the person at the center of the religion. The questioner expects either a defense of the practice or an admission that it is pointless, but instead gets something worse: confirmation that the meaninglessness is not a bug but a feature that even divinity has succumbed to. It is a sharp satire of how religious observances can become empty habits, made funnier by the fact that the ultimate religious authority is the one confessing to it.
