local
Explanation
This is a short, observational comic showing a man at what appears to be a bar or social gathering in a foreign country. He says: "The local kind of alcohol, coffee, or tea is good and wasn't it horrible what the British did here that one time?"
The caption below reads: "It's easy to make friends in any country on Earth."
The joke is that this is a universal formula for ingratiating yourself with locals virtually anywhere in the world: (1) compliment whatever the local beverage of choice is, and (2) acknowledge some historical atrocity committed by the British Empire. Since the British Empire colonized or interfered with a staggering number of countries throughout history, the second part of the formula works almost everywhere. The comic is a wry commentary on both the universality of certain social pleasantries and the sheer geographic reach of British colonial history.
