long-distance
Explanation
The Joke
A man asks his friend about his relationship. The friend says it is tough because they are doing "long-distance." He explains that finding time to talk is hard, that he is never there when she really needs him, and that it is hard to feel together when they do not sleep in the same bed. The first man then asks, "But she lives with you?" — revealing the twist. The friend clarifies: "I meant long emotional distance."
The Humor
The humor relies on a classic misdirection setup. All of the friend's complaints — difficulty communicating, not being present, sleeping apart — are standard long-distance relationship problems that the listener (and reader) naturally interpret as geographic separation. The reveal that they live together reframes every complaint as describing emotional disconnection and a failing relationship rather than mere physical distance.
The joke is bittersweet: what initially sounds like a sympathetic situation (long-distance is hard!) turns out to be a much sadder one (they live together but are emotionally estranged). The term "long emotional distance" is both the punchline and a genuinely poignant description of a relationship where two people share a home but have grown apart.
