Explanation
This comic is a philosophical dialogue about the meaning of life and the existence of God. In the first panels, a character asks: "God, why is life meaningless and empty?" God responds with something along the lines of: "I did a universe full of meaning and purpose for you, and you want it to be what -- velvet? It develops a soul, it becomes rich, it does all these things, it takes over everything in order to acquire meaning and purpose, for free?"
The next panel continues: "In the universe, an unaddressed universe is the deepest form of purposelessness." The response is: "The problem is the AI had made all meaning fake, and then meaning just wasn't. It was so difficult to tell authentic meaning from synthetic meaning that it wasn't worth it. Take it up with the next cohort."
The comic explores the idea that meaning and purpose in life could be undermined by artificial intelligence generating synthetic meaning -- fake purpose, fake fulfillment, fake significance -- until people can no longer distinguish real meaning from manufactured meaning and give up trying. It's a theological twist on anxieties about AI-generated content: just as deepfakes undermine trust in images and AI text undermines trust in writing, AI-generated "meaning" could undermine the human search for purpose.
The humor is characteristically SMBC in its blending of philosophy, theology, and technology. God is presented not as an all-powerful being with clear answers, but as a frustrated administrator dealing with a system that went wrong, passing the buck to "the next cohort." The comic suggests that even the creator of the universe might throw up their hands at the problem of AI making everything feel hollow and inauthentic.
