myth-2
Explanation
This comic explores the idea that superhero stories are modern mythology, then takes the comparison to its logical (and absurd) extreme.
A woman argues: "I think superhero stories are modern myths." Others initially push back: "No! No! Myths are for people who believe them. They're not comics. It's weird nerd crap!" But the woman challenges this: "If Superman were a myth, imagine the stories would be amazing -- a virtuous being raised among humans, using his alien power to protect them, leading to bigger questions about justice."
Then she takes it further: "There should be vivid stories about heroes wrestling naked around each other, gods having long-term affairs with mortals, heroes dancing naked around an inferno, wise leaders in the world of the dead arguing about cheese." This describes actual elements of Greek mythology -- gods wrestling, Zeus's many affairs, various ecstatic rituals, and discussions in the underworld.
The punchline lands in two parts. First, a man says: "You've been thinking about this too much." The woman counters: "On an unrelated topic, would you like to join my Superman cult?" -- revealing that her argument wasn't just intellectual but was actually recruitment for literal Superman worship.
The humor works by highlighting the double standard in how we treat ancient myths versus modern stories. Greek myths are full of bizarre, raunchy, and violent content that we treat with scholarly reverence, while superhero stories that deal with similar themes (power, justice, mortality) are dismissed as "nerd crap." The final twist -- that taking the comparison seriously leads to founding a literal religious cult around Superman -- shows the comic following the logical thread to its most absurd conclusion.
