promotion
Explanation
The Joke
The comic shows a man coming home from work, excitedly announcing to his wife "Hey, honey! Guess who just got promoted?" The wife, rather than congratulating him, responds with "That guy who's three years younger than you?" In the final panel, the man breaks down crying and says "I hate him so much!"
The wife's guess reveals that the promotion did not go to the husband at all -- it went to a younger colleague, and this is apparently such a well-known sore spot that the wife can immediately identify who got the promotion. The husband's rhetorical question backfires completely.
The Humor
The joke works through a bait-and-switch: the setup leads the reader (and presumably the wife) to initially think the husband is announcing his own promotion, but the wife's instant, knowing response reveals the truth. The comedy comes from the relatable workplace frustration of being passed over for promotion by someone younger, and the fact that the husband is so consumed by jealousy that even his attempt to share the news comes out as an excited question -- as if some part of him wanted to talk about it but could not bring himself to lead with the painful truth. His emotional collapse in the final panel, admitting "I hate him so much," completes the picture of a man whose professional ego has been thoroughly bruised. The wife's deadpan accuracy suggests this is not the first time this younger colleague has been a source of anguish.
