rocket-science
Explanation
The Joke
A woman remarks that a man has been studying "a lot of rocket science lately," to which he modestly replies "sorta." He then explains that he has actually built about 40 rockets and is currently working on a tongue-twister about characteristic velocity -- a real and important concept in rocketry. In the next panel, the woman observes that he has also been getting their kids into rocketry, tutoring her, and learning Spanish. He confirms this. In the final panel, she says "See, stingy Scott, this is for you" and he replies "I am so torn right now."
The joke plays on the idea that someone can be simultaneously incredibly accomplished (building 40 rockets, educating his family, learning languages) while also being emotionally conflicted when his partner uses his achievements as ammunition to shame someone named "Stingy Scott." His genuine passion and productivity are being weaponized in a petty interpersonal conflict, and he is torn between pride in his accomplishments and discomfort at how they are being deployed.
The Humor
The comedy comes from the sharp pivot between the wholesome buildup -- a portrait of a renaissance man who builds rockets, teaches his family, and learns languages -- and the punchline reveal that his partner's main interest in all of this is using it to one-up someone else. The man's response of being "torn" is funny because it captures the exact awkward feeling of having your genuine achievements co-opted for someone else's petty argument.
