Explanation
The Joke
This comic is a promotional strip for Zach Weinersmith's book. It takes the form of a meta-comic where God approaches a red-headed man (a recurring character meant to represent Weinersmith) and complains about how the man's book "Science Abridged" boils down vast scientific topics to just a few sentences per chapter. God notes that the man hasn't been struck with lightning for two years and thinks perhaps the man has learned humility, only to discover the man thought he was "Ivan North."
God becomes increasingly upset that the book reduces the grand complexity of creation -- "the song of reality, the melody of the stars" -- into overly simplified summaries. God punctuates his outrage by smashing the book with a "BAM!" The comic then reveals the book as a companion piece to the Holy Bible, presented alongside a plug for the Kickstarter campaign for "Soonish," another Weinersmith book.
The Humor
The humor operates on multiple levels. First, there is the absurdity of God personally objecting to a pop-science book on the grounds that it trivializes his creation. Second, there is the self-deprecating joke about Weinersmith's own work being reductive. Third, the whole strip is ultimately an advertisement disguised as a comic, which it openly acknowledges at the top ("Hey geeks! The following is an ad for a new book"). The juxtaposition of the Holy Bible and "Science Abridged" as companion volumes is an irreverent visual gag typical of SMBC's treatment of science and religion.
