shell
Explanation
This four-panel comic depicts a relationship conversation gone wrong. A man approaches a woman named Celia and says "Celia, we need to talk about us. We need toβ" but before he can finish, she spots something and says "Hey!"
In the second panel, a voice says "Don't do it!" but Celia is already climbing into a giant turtle shell.
In the third panel, the man shouts "Don't you go inside the giant turtle shell!" In the final panel, Celia is curled up inside the shell and declares: "There is no breakup conversation. All is shell." The man calls out her name in frustration.
The joke operates on two levels. On the surface, it is absurd β a person literally crawling inside a giant turtle shell to avoid a difficult conversation. But it is also a visual metaphor for the common behavior of "retreating into one's shell" when faced with uncomfortable emotional situations. The phrase "All is shell" is a humorous parody of meditative or philosophical declarations ("All is one," "All is void"), elevating the act of avoidance to an almost spiritual practice. The comic pokes fun at how people will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid confronting relationship problems.
