sodomites-come-together
Explanation
The Joke
Abraham stands in the streets of Sodom shouting to the people: "People of Sodom! It is Abraham! God has come to destroy you, and there's no time for escape! I strongly encourage everyone to spend their final moments experiencing the joy of doing it in the butt!" The caption reads: "Some descriptions from the Bible are not entirely chronologically accurate."
The Humor
In the biblical account (Genesis 18-19), the people of Sodom were already notorious for their sinful behavior before God decided to destroy the city. Abraham actually argued with God to spare the city if even a few righteous people could be found there. The comic reverses the causality: instead of Sodom being destroyed because of the residents' behavior, Abraham arrives and actively encourages the residents to engage in the very acts associated with the city's reputation, since they are about to be destroyed anyway. The caption's dry understatement — noting that biblical descriptions may not be "entirely chronologically accurate" — adds to the humor by implying this version of events is only slightly off from the biblical text. The joke plays on the common tendency to associate the name "Sodom" with a specific sexual act (the English word "sodomy" derives from the city's name), and imagines a farcical scenario where Abraham acts as an enthusiastic instigator rather than a righteous patriarch.
References
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is described in Genesis 18-19 of the Bible. Abraham negotiates with God to spare the cities if righteous inhabitants can be found, ultimately failing to find enough. The cities are then destroyed by "brimstone and fire." The English word "sodomy" derives from the city's name, reflecting traditional interpretations of the sins for which the city was punished.
