Explanation
The Joke
The caption reads "The Synthetic Biology Department isn't taking any chances." Below it is a glass case — the kind you typically see in buildings with a fire extinguisher or axe labeled "In case of fire, break glass." But this case reads "IN CASE OF SENTIENT GLASS, BREAK GLASS" and contains a baseball bat.
The Humor
The joke plays on the familiar emergency sign format "In case of [emergency], break glass." Synthetic biology is the field of engineering biological systems, and the comic imagines a scenario where the department has accidentally created sentient glass — glass that is alive and aware. The humor lies in the recursive, self-defeating nature of the solution: the emergency tool to deal with sentient glass is itself trapped behind glass. If the glass of the case were also sentient, you would need to break sentient glass to get the bat to break sentient glass. There is also the broader joke about how a department dedicated to creating new life forms has very specific and absurd contingency plans for the unintended consequences of their work — they are clearly aware things could go very wrong in very strange ways.
