Explanation
The Joke
A couple is sitting in candlelight when the man exclaims, "Wow! It's like we're back in the 19th century!" The woman asks if it's because the power is out. He replies, "Because I secretly gave you typhus." She demands to be taken to a hospital, and he responds, "I don't think women were allowed to drive back then."
The Humor
The comic starts with what seems like a romantic nostalgia for the past — candlelit evenings evoking the 19th century. But it quickly deconstructs the romanticization of historical eras by pointing out the horrible realities: deadly diseases like typhus were common, and women had severely restricted rights. Each line escalates the dark humor: the man isn't being romantic, he's recreated the 19th century experience by giving her a dangerous illness, and when she needs medical help, he doubles down by noting the gender restrictions of the era. The comic satirizes the common tendency to idealize the past ("the good old days") while ignoring the very real suffering that defined earlier centuries.
