The Joke
A group of academic specialists — a paleontologist, a physicist, and an astrophysicist — form "The League of Curmudgeons." Each of them is an expert in a narrow field who gets annoyed by inaccuracies in movies related to their own discipline: the paleontologist spots flaws in dinosaur movies, the physicist knows that satellite motion is depicted inaccurately, and the astrophysicist laments that the stars shown behind things are in the wrong positions. They realize that by combining their powers of pedantic nitpicking, they can hate every movie ever made. When one member suggests they could also focus on "good films," the group immediately moves to banish that person as a "film snob."
The Humor
The comic satirizes the well-known tendency of scientists, academics, and other specialists to be unable to enjoy movies because they keep noticing technical inaccuracies in their area of expertise. The joke escalates this into a formal organization dedicated to collective hatred of all cinema. The final punchline adds another layer: the person who suggests actually watching good films is ejected from the group, because the entire point of the League is to complain, not to enjoy anything. The label "film snob" is ironic — in most contexts, focusing on quality would be reasonable, but among dedicated curmudgeons, positivity is the real offense.
