Explanation
The Joke
A woman is at a store or restaurant and is asked for her ID. The clerk/server comments, "Wow! You look so young!" -- a compliment the woman appears to appreciate. But then the clerk follows up with: "But you are old." The woman is taken aback, and the clerk continues with the brutal observation: "You will die much sooner than you'd think, judging by appearance alone."
The final panel shows the woman resignedly saying "Gimme my wine. You'll get it," or words to that effect -- essentially accepting the harsh truth and proceeding with her purchase. The comic takes the familiar social ritual of being carded for alcohol (and the accompanying flattery about looking young) and pushes the "honesty" to its logical but socially devastating conclusion.
The Humor
The joke plays on the social convention around checking IDs. Being told "you look so young" when buying age-restricted products is a reliable ego boost, and most people enjoy hearing it. The comic asks: what if the clerk did not stop at the compliment but continued to its logical corollary? If you look younger than you are, that means you are older than you look -- and thus closer to death. The clerk's blunt, almost clinical observation about mortality turns a pleasant social interaction into an existential confrontation. The woman's defeated acceptance and immediate pivot to "just give me the wine" is the perfect response -- when confronted with your own mortality, alcohol seems like a reasonable next step.
