conservation-of-energy-2
Explanation
The Joke
A professor-like figure stands at what appears to be a lecture podium and presents a pseudo-scientific theory: if any civilization discovers a free energy source and creates sex robots, it will put on so much mass so quickly that it will collapse in on itself, forming a black hole. The caption below reads: "Fact: If Conservation of Energy is wrong, the Fermi Paradox is explained."
The comic connects two scientific concepts in an absurd way. The Fermi Paradox asks why, given the vastness of the universe, we have not detected any signs of extraterrestrial civilizations. The joke proposes a darkly comedic solution: any advanced civilization that breaks the conservation of energy (obtaining free energy) would immediately use it for hedonistic purposes (sex robots), consume unlimited food with their unlimited energy, gain infinite mass, and collapse into a black hole -- thereby removing themselves from the observable universe.
The Humor
The humor works on multiple levels. First, there is the absurd logical chain: free energy leads not to utopian advancement but to unlimited indulgence, obesity, and gravitational collapse. It is a cynical commentary on human nature -- given infinite resources, we would not explore the stars but rather eat and pursue pleasure until we literally became a black hole. Second, the deadpan academic presentation style contrasts hilariously with the ridiculous content. The character presents this as if it were a legitimate scientific hypothesis.
References
The Fermi Paradox, named after physicist Enrico Fermi, refers to the apparent contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial civilizations existing and the lack of evidence for them. Many serious proposed solutions exist (the Great Filter, the Zoo Hypothesis, etc.), but this comic offers a satirical one.
The Conservation of Energy is a fundamental principle of physics stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. "Free energy" in this context means energy from nothing, which would violate this law.
