If I Were Rich
Explanation
The Joke
A man asks a woman "Would you love me more if I were rich?" The woman answers "Probably yeah." But instead of being offended, the man launches into a perfectly reasonable explanation of why: they could work less, spend more time together developing a deeper bond, afford better hygiene leading to less bickering, and be in physically beautiful settings conducive to emotional connection. The woman is left stunned, noting "Sometimes a question is more than just its words," and asks "Am I a mind reader?"
The Humor
The comedy comes from subverting the classic relationship trap question. "Would you love me more if I were rich?" is usually a loaded question designed to test whether a partner is materialistic. The expected answer is a reassuring "Of course not, I love you for who you are." But here the woman gives the honest answer ("Probably yeah"), and the man -- rather than being hurt -- validates her reasoning with a thoughtful sociological analysis of how wealth reduces relationship stress. The final panel twist is that the woman realizes his question was not a trap at all but a genuine, nuanced inquiry, and she feels guilty for not recognizing that. The joke plays on how we often assume the worst about common relationship questions when they might actually be asked in good faith.
